In a field as emotionally charged as mental health, burnout and complacency can be natural consequences of hard work with good intention. We owe it to those who are suffering to be mindful of the toll compassion fatigue can have on our patients. Our stance towards treatment and presence in the room can have a profound influence on the will of those who are often at their most vulnerable. My hope is that we can bring a beginner’s mind to each encounter with awareness that, “We are all more simply human than otherwise.”
